Darkness into Light
Saturday 9 April 2011
All Hallow’s Chapel, Brisbane
A reflective choral program tracing the literal and psychological journey from darkness into light
from darkness to light,
the world transformed by the stretching of the shadows,
the luring hues of blue and black, the penumbra,
the glitter in the darkness,
the hoards of mysteries hiding under the cloak of night,
a cosy slumber,
the crescendo hum of creatures and land,
the rim of light curving the sky.
This program included works by Thomas Weelkes, Claudio Monteverdi, Giaches de Wert, Andrea Gabrieli, Larry Nickel, Yehuda Yannay, Morten Lauridsen, Luciano Lunkes, Eric William Barnum and the world premiere of Pomegranate Friends (Gerardo Dirié).

About Pomegranate Friends
"Pomegranate Friends continues my explorations into the poetic potentials in Matteo Ricci’s On Friendship. After his travels to China, the Italian Jesuit priest had acquired proficiency in Mandarin and set himself to translate a collection of Chinese aphorisms about the values and virtues of friendship. While Two Hands or Wings reflects on the mysteries and preciousness of finding friends, Pomegranate Friends ponders on the dangers of finding oneself tied up in pernicious relationships and contrasts this with the potential for growth that honest friends bring to our lives. The poems, choral voices, electronic sounds and saxophone participate in a metaphorical rendering of congenial or conflicting tuning systems. - Gerardo Dirié
